Now available: PLANTS FOR YOUR FOOD FOREST: 500 Plants for Temperate Food Forests and Permaculture Gardens.

An important new book from PFAF. It focuses on the attributes of plants suitable for food forests, what each can contribute to a food forest ecosystem, including carbon sequestration, and the kinds of foods they yield. The book suggests that community and small-scale food forests can provide a real alternative to intensive industrialised agriculture, and help to combat the many inter-related environmental crises that threaten the very future of life on Earth.

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain. It is unlikely to succeed outside the very mildest areas of the country. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus. Requires a moist but well-drained humus rich soil in shade or full sun[200]. Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus[200]. Dioecious, male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.

Propagation

Seed - best sown when ripe in the autumn in a warm greenhouse[200]. The seed can be slow to germinate. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, July/August in a frame[200]. Air layering[200].

I am very interested in the perfume of this shrub as my ancestor wore it to attract her husband and gave birth to a boy child who was given that name raukawa. I am a decendent and would like to aquire at least 4 to 6 seedlings or some seeds to grow a small grove on my farm.
