The flowers are also reported as edible in the material supplied, but they are small and provide little practical food [2-3]. A loamy or fine-textured mineral soil enriched with leaf mould is generally suitable. Constantly waterlogged ground is less appropriate than moist soil that drains after snowmelt or rainfall. It is adapted to climates with cold winters and can occur from valley bottoms to subalpine elevations. In gardens, afternoon shade can help preserve foliage in warm climates. Deep dry shade, however, may reduce flowering and seed production. Habitat & Distribution: Ballhead waterleaf is native to western North America, from British Columbia and Alberta south through parts of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Common names include ballhead waterleaf, ball-head waterleaf, woolly-breeches, dwarf waterleaf, and woolen breeches. Hydrophyllum capitatum is an accepted species native to western Canada and the western and west-central United States. Plant Propagation
Ballhead waterleaf can be propagated from seed or by careful division of established plants. Fresh seed can be sown in autumn so that it experiences natural winter cold and moisture. The seed should be covered lightly rather than buried deeply. Cold, moist stratification may improve germination of stored seed. Seedlings should be protected from drying during their first spring. Division is possible while plants are dormant or just beginning growth. Each division should contain part of the crown, healthy roots, and at least one viable bud. The fleshy roots are delicate and should not be allowed to dry during transplanting. Seed propagation is preferable for establishing larger conservation plantings because it preserves genetic diversity and avoids destructive removal from wild colonies. Nursery-propagated material should be chosen instead of wild-dug plants whenever available. Division in spring or autumn[200]. Very easy; larger clumps can be replanted directly into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.

Ballhead waterleaf has low weed potential. It can form small colonies through rhizomes and seed, but it does not normally spread aggressively through dry gardens or dense established vegetation. Its dependence on seasonally moist soil and cool spring conditions limits its ability to invade heavily altered or arid environments. Self-sown seedlings may appear near cultivated plants where bare, moist soil remains available. These are generally easy to remove or transplant. Within its native range, colony formation should be regarded as normal ecological growth rather than weediness. The species is unlikely to become invasive outside cultivation, but local environmental guidance should still be followed before introducing any plant beyond its natural distribution.
