Summary
New Mexico hop is the only native hop naturally widespread across much of the southwestern United States. Although closely related to the European hop, its greatest historical importance was not brewing but Indigenous food preparation and flavoring. The young spring shoots are edible and are regarded as the finest food produced by the plant. When harvested while still tender, they can be prepared much like asparagus and have long been considered an excellent seasonal vegetable. The aromatic female cones, commonly called hops, were traditionally gathered by Apache peoples and boiled before being used to flavor a wide range of foods and beverages. Earlier writers sometimes interpreted these accounts as evidence that hop seeds were milled into flour. The historical evidence instead shows that the cones themselves were used as flavorings rather than as a source of starch. Edward Castetter recorded that the Apache gathered the hops in autumn, boiled them and mixed them with mesquite flour, screwbean flour, wheat flour, wild potatoes and fermented maize beverages to impart flavor. The cones acted much like a spice or seasoning rather than a staple food. The seeds enclosed within mature cones appear to have some potential as food after careful processing. The field observations supplied suggest that gentle toasting followed by boiling greatly improves their flavor and texture. However, historical evidence confirming that Native Americans regularly ate the seeds remains lacking. Rhizomes have occasionally been reported as edible, but detailed descriptions are scarce and harvesting them destroys the perennial crown. Consequently, they should not be regarded as an important food source. New Mexico hop is therefore best considered an excellent edible shoot vegetable combined with an aromatic flavoring plant of considerable cultural importance.

Edible Uses
The tender spring shoots are edible raw or cooked, although cooking generally produces the best flavour and texture. Only shoots approximately 6–10 centimeters long should be gathered, since older growth rapidly becomes fibrous. The female cones are edible only as flavoring. Their powerful resinous bitterness makes them unsuitable for eating in quantity but valuable in soups, breads, fermented beverages and herbal preparations. The mature seeds contained inside pollinated cones may become reasonably palatable after careful processing involving gentle roasting and boiling. Their widespread traditional use as food has not been confirmed. Rhizomes have occasionally been reported as edible in older literature but are poorly documented and should not be harvested except for research purposes [2-3]. Edibility Rating: 3/5. New Mexico hop receives an overall edibility rating of 3 out of 5. The young shoots are an excellent seasonal vegetable deserving a much higher rating on their own, while the cones have considerable value as flavorings. The overall score is reduced because the edible season is brief, the cones are far too bitter to be eaten directly, and the edible value of the seeds and rhizomes remains uncertain [2-3]. Taste, Processing & Culinary Use: The young shoots have a delicate, aromatic flavor with a pleasant bitterness that recalls asparagus, young green beans and spring greens. As the shoots elongate, this bitterness becomes stronger while the stems rapidly become fibrous. Fresh shoots can be steamed, sautéed or briefly boiled. A short cooking time preserves both flavor and texture. Overcooking softens the shoots but also increases their bitterness. The mature cones are intensely aromatic because of the abundant yellow resin glands, known as lupulin. These resins contain the same compounds that make cultivated hops indispensable to brewing. Small quantities contribute herbal, resinous and pleasantly bitter notes, while larger quantities rapidly become overpowering. The field observations supplied provide particularly interesting information on the seeds. Mature cones eventually dry into papery structures that readily release the small greyish-tan seeds. Drying is often necessary before separation. Winnowing removes much of the papery material because the bracts are lighter than the seeds. Raw seeds possess an extremely acrid resinous flavor. Gentle toasting improves the aroma but usually leaves considerable bitterness. Boiling is more effective at removing the harsher resins. The combination of light roasting, boiling and discarding the cooking water produced the most favorable results during the fieldwork, leaving pleasantly starchy seeds with only mild resinous overtones. Although encouraging, these observations should be regarded as experimental. Historical records do not confirm that the seeds themselves were eaten as a significant food [2-3]. Seasonality (Phenology): Dormant rhizomes survive winter beneath the soil while all above-ground growth dies back after frost. New shoots emerge during spring as temperatures rise, usually from April through early June depending on elevation. The edible shoot season is extremely brief, generally lasting only a few weeks before the stems begin climbing and toughening. Flowering usually occurs during midsummer. Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. The aromatic female cones mature from late summer into autumn. Traditional gathering by Apache communities occurred around October, when the cones had developed maximum flavor. Pollinated cones eventually dry, allowing the seeds to separate readily from the papery bracts. The bines naturally die back during autumn following frost, while the underground crown remains alive and ready to produce fresh shoots the following spring [2-3]. Safety & Cautions: The bitter resins that give hops their distinctive aroma are biologically active compounds and should be consumed only in moderate culinary quantities. Handling fresh bines can cause scratches because the stems and leaves are covered with rough hooked hairs. Sensitive individuals may also develop mild skin irritation after prolonged contact with the resins. Like cultivated hops, New Mexico hop possesses mild sedative properties and may increase drowsiness when combined with alcohol or sedative medications. The greatest hazard involves domestic dogs. All hop species may cause malignant hyperthermia in susceptible dogs following ingestion of cones, brewing waste, or dried hops. Veterinary treatment should be sought immediately if exposure is suspected. The seeds should only be eaten after adequate processing. Their traditional use as human food has never been convincingly demonstrated. Rhizomes should generally not be harvested because they destroy the perennial plant and lack adequate documentation as a food resource [2-3]. Harvest & Processing: Young shoots should be harvested when approximately 6–10 centimeters tall. They are easily cut near ground level using a knife or scissors. Only a portion of the emerging shoots should be collected from each crown. Remaining shoots are needed to produce healthy climbing stems and replenish the underground rhizomes. Female cones are gathered once fully aromatic but before prolonged weathering reduces their quality. Traditionally, they were boiled and used as flavorings rather than eaten directly. If seeds are desired, cones should be allowed to mature completely until dry and papery. Gentle rubbing separates the seeds from the bracts, after which light winnowing removes much of the chaff. Experimental processing suggests lightly roasting the seeds, simmering them in water, and discarding the cooking liquid before use. Traditional Indigenous Uses: New Mexico hop has a particularly well-documented place in Apache food traditions. Edward Castetter recorded that the Apache gathered the mature hops during October and boiled them before using them as flavorings. The boiled hops were mixed with mesquite flour, screwbean flour and later wheat flour. They also flavored wild potato dishes and the fermented maize beverage known as tulbai. These records demonstrate that hops were valued primarily as flavorings and preservatives rather than as a staple food. Earlier interpretations suggesting that hop seeds were ground into flour appear to misunderstand these historical accounts. The plant therefore occupies an interesting position within Indigenous food traditions—not as a major source of calories but as an important seasoning that enhanced many other foods [2-3].

Their strongly bitter flavor largely accounts for their ability to strengthen and stimulate the digestion, increasing gastric and other secretions[254]. The female fruiting body is anodyne, antiseptic, antispasmodic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypnotic, nervine, sedative, stomachic and tonic[4, 9, 21, 46, 165, 192, 218]. Hops are widely used as a folk remedy to treat a wide range of complaints, including boils, bruises, calculus, cancer, cramps, cough, cystitis, debility, delirium, diarrhea, dyspepsia, fever, fits, hysteria, inflammation, insomnia, jaundice, nerves, neuralgia, rheumatism, and worms[269]. The hairs on the fruits contain lupulin, a sedative and hypnotic drug[213, 218]. When given to nursing mothers, lupulin increases the flow of milk - recent research has shown that it contains a related hormone that could account for this effect[7]. The decoction from the flower is said to remedy swellings and hardness of the uterus[269]. Hop flowers are much used as an infusion or can also be used to stuff pillows where the weight of the head will release the volatile oils[213]. The fruit is also applied externally as a poultice to ulcers, boils, painful swellings, etc[4, 218]; it is said to remedy painful tumors [269]. The female flowering heads are harvested in the autumn and can be used fresh or dried[238]. Alcoholic extracts of hops in various dosage forms have been used clinically in treating numerous forms of leprosy, pulmonary tuberculosis, and acute bacterial dysentery, with varying degrees of success in China. The female fruiting body contains humulone and lupulone; these are highly bacteriostatic against gram-positive and acid-fast bacteria[240]. A cataplasm of the leaf is said to remedy cold tumors [269]. The German Commission E Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Humulus lupulus for nervousness and insomnia (see [302] for critics of Commission E).

New Mexico hop is an attractive native climber suitable for wildlife gardens, edible landscapes, and restoration plantings. Wildlife & Ecology: The dense seasonal foliage provides cover for birds and many beneficial insects. Numerous native insects feed upon the foliage, while spiders and predatory insects hunt within the climbing stems. The flowers are wind-pollinated rather than insect-pollinated, but the vegetation contributes useful habitat within riparian and woodland ecosystems. Because it dies back completely each winter, the plant allows sunlight to reach surrounding vegetation during the dormant season.

Growing Conditions: New Mexico hop grows best in full sun or light woodland shade. In nature, it commonly occurs where the roots remain relatively cool and moist while the stems climb into brighter light. It prefers fertile, well-drained soils with reliable moisture during spring and early summer. Although considerably more drought-tolerant than European hop once established, prolonged drought reduces growth and cone production. Natural populations are often associated with streambanks, canyon bottoms, moist ravines, oak woodlands, juniper communities, and open pine forests. Strong climbing supports greatly improve growth. Plants readily ascend shrubs, fences, trees, and trellises using their twining stems. Habitat & Distribution: New Mexico hop is native throughout much of western North America, particularly Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and neighboring states. It usually occurs at mid elevations in canyons and mountain valleys where seasonal moisture remains available. The species is especially characteristic of oak woodland, pinyon-juniper woodland, and open ponderosa pine forests. Unlike European hop, it is well adapted to the comparatively dry climates of the interior western United States. The processed seeds also show intriguing potential, although historical evidence for their widespread use as food remains limited. Plant Propagation
Division of rhizomes during dormancy provides the easiest and most reliable method of propagation. Softwood cuttings taken during spring may also root successfully under humid conditions. Seeds require cold stratification before germination and produce genetically variable offspring. Approximately half the seedlings will eventually prove to be male plants. Vegetative propagation remains the preferred method when female cone production is desired.

New Mexico hop has low to moderate weed potential. It spreads gradually by underground rhizomes and may slowly form colonies where growing conditions remain favourable. Unlike several introduced climbing species, it rarely becomes invasive over large areas and generally coexists well with native woodland vegetation. Regular pruning easily keeps cultivated plants within bounds.
