Summary

Meadow barley is a short- to moderately long-lived perennial bunchgrass associated especially with wet meadows, marsh margins, riverbanks, seasonally flooded grasslands, moist woodland openings, and mountain meadows. The mature grains of Meadow Barley are edible, but the species is not a particularly efficient wild food. Each fertile central spikelet produces a small grain. The two lateral spikelets in each group are usually reduced or sterile, so a seed head yields much less grain than its bristly appearance might suggest. This differs from cultivated six-row barley, in which all three spikelets at each rachis node may be fertile. The grains need to be separated from the awns, glumes, lemmas and paleas before they are comfortable to eat. Immature grains may be soft enough to nibble after removal from the husk, but they are small and often insubstantial. Fully mature grains become hard and require cooking, grinding, parching or another moistening or heating process. The most practical preparations are likely to be parched grain, boiled grain, cracked-grain porridge or flour blended with meal from larger-seeded cereals. Because of the small grain and persistent husk, Meadow Barley is better understood as a supplementary grain or survival food than as a staple crop. No strong evidence suggests that the foliage is used as ordinary human food. Young leaves are grazed by animals, but their fibrous texture, silica content and limited nutritional return make them unsuitable as a conventional vegetable [2-3]. Propagation is primarily by seed. Collect seed when the grains are mature but before the brittle heads have completely broken apart. Dry and clean the spikelets before storage. Autumn sowing is often effective because it exposes the seed to natural winter conditions. Spring sowing can also succeed, especially when fresh, viable seed is used. Press seed into a prepared surface and cover lightly. Maintain reliable moisture until germination and establishment. Seedling vigor can be strong under suitable conditions, one reason the species is useful in restoration. The plant can also be propagated by division. Lift established clumps while dormant or during cool weather and separate them into sections containing roots and active buds. Replant immediately and water thoroughly. Regional ecotypes should be preserved where ecological restoration is the goal. Seed from distant climates may leaf out, flower, or enter dormancy at unsuitable times.

Weed Potential

Meadow Barley has low to moderate weed potential within cultivation. It produces numerous seeds and may self-sow in moist open soil, especially where competition is limited. However, it is a bunchgrass rather than an aggressively rhizomatous species, and it does not normally spread rapidly through established garden beds. Its brittle seed heads allow short-distance dispersal on animals, clothing, equipment and moving water. In its native range, natural colonization of wet meadows, disturbed shores and restoration sites should not be regarded as invasive behavior. Outside its native range, locally appropriate risk assessment is advisable, particularly near wetlands where its seed may establish readily. Unwanted seedlings are easiest to remove while young. Cutting the seed heads before maturity will greatly reduce spread.
