Known Hazards Correct identification is essential. Several unrelated bulb-forming plants grow in similar habitats, including highly poisonous death camas (Toxicoscordion species, formerly included in Zigadenus). Summary

Spotted fritillary (Fritillaria atropurpurea) belongs to the lily family (Liliaceae) and the genus Fritillaria. Common names include spotted fritillary, leopard lily, spotted mountain bells, and chocolate lily (although this name is also applied to other species). The underground bulbs and small attached bulblets are edible after cooking. Raw bulbs are crisp but often bitter. Cooking greatly improves the flavor and texture, transforming them into a mild, starchy vegetable [2-3]. Edible Uses & Rating: Spotted fritillary bulbs can be roasted, baked, boiled, or added to cooked dishes. They provide a pleasant potato-like food when prepared correctly [2-3]. Edibility Rating: 3/5. The flavor is good after cooking, but the small size, limited abundance, and conservation concerns reduce its practical value. Taste, Processing & Kitchen Notes: Fresh bulbs have a firm, crisp texture with noticeable bitterness. Heat breaks down much of the bitterness and develops a sweet, earthy, starchy quality similar to small potatoes or other edible lily bulbs. Baking and roasting are especially suitable because they concentrate the sweetness [2-3]. The tiny bulblets can also be cooked, though collecting enough for a meaningful quantity requires a large colony. Seasonality (Phenology): Spotted fritillary flowers from spring into early summer, typically April to July, depending on elevation. Spotted fritillary is a good-quality but low-yielding edible plant. Its greatest modern value is as a beautiful native wildflower and part of diverse mountain meadow ecosystems. Conservation-minded harvesting is important. Growing Conditions: Spotted fritillary prefers sunny to lightly shaded sites with well-drained soils. It grows naturally in rocky meadows, open forests, and mountain slopes. Habitat & Range: Native to western North America, occurring in mountain meadows, sagebrush openings, rocky slopes, and open woodland habitats. Size & Landscape Performance: Its delicate form and unusual spotted flowers make it valuable in native gardens, rock gardens, and naturalized meadow plantings. Cultivation (Horticulture): Plants prefer conditions that mimic their native habitat: winter moisture, spring growth, and relatively dry summers. Bulbs should not remain waterlogged. Pests & Problems: Few serious problems occur in suitable habitats. Bulb disturbance, grazing pressure, and habitat loss are greater threats than disease. Identification & Habit: A small perennial emerging from a bulb, with narrow linear leaves and nodding flowers. The six yellowish tepals are marked with distinctive purple-brown spotting. Pollinators: Flowers attract native bees and other insects adapted to early-season mountain wildflowers. A woodland plant, preferring light soils[1]. It is best grown in well-drained sandy woodland soil [42, 90, 134]. Plants are best grown in a bulb frame and kept rather dry in summer[90]. Plant Propagation

Propagation is by seed or division of naturally produced bulblets. Seed-grown plants may require several years before flowering. Seed - best sown as soon as ripe in a cold frame, it should germinate in the spring[1]. Protect from frost[134]. Stored seed should be sown as soon as possible, as it can take a year or more to germinate [134]. Sow the seed quite thinly to avoid the need to prick out the seedlings. Once they have germinated, give them an occasional liquid feed to ensure that they do not suffer mineral deficiency. Once they die down at the end of their second growing season, divide the small bulbs, planting 2-3 in an 8cm-deep pot. Grow them on for at least another year in light shade in the greenhouse before planting them out whilst dormant. Division of offsets in August[1]. The larger bulbs can be planted out directly into their permanent positions, but it is best to pot up the smaller bulbs and grow them on in a cold frame for a year before planting them out in the autumn. Bulb scales[163].
