A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years. The term is often used to differentiate a plant from shorter-lived annuals and biennials. The term in this context is used to distinguish plants with little or no woody growth (secondary growth in girth) from trees and shrubs, which are also technically perennials.

Herbaceous perennials are perennials, particularly small flowering plants, that develop and bloom in the spring and summer, fall back in the autumn and winter, and then reappear in the spring from their rootstock or other overwintering structure.
