Physical Characteristics

Ixeris stolonifera is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.2 m (0ft 8in) by 0.5 m (1ft 8in). The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects.
Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in this country, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors at least in the milder parts of the country. We suggest growing it in a sunny position and a well-drained soil.

Propagation

Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in a cold frame in spring and only just covering the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division can also be tried in spring or autumn.

I have grown this plant for about 10 years and it has hung in there and spread moderately. This year, we have had much more rain than usual and the temperatures have been hot earlier than usual (? global warming?). As a result, it has turned into a rampant thug. Covering all the small crevice plants on my patio, spreading into the lawn and running amuck amongst smaller less aggressive plants. It looks great in a way and it you had a sight where this would be a plus, it would be a great, easy care ground cover. Otherwise be careful where you plant it , especially if you have warm damp summers. I have spent two days trying to extricate it from my lawn, beds and patio and I know the fight isn't over yet.
