Summary
Spiny aster is a distinctive, shrub-like member of the sunflower family native to riparian corridors and sandy washes of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Unlike most asters, it relies heavily on green, photosynthetic stems rather than leaves, which are tiny, scale-like, and short-lived. Its edible potential is limited to brief windows following rainfall, when tender new shoots emerge, and to the use of older stems as a mild, mineral-rich tea. Although known and occasionally used by Native Americans, it has always been a marginal food due to its small edible portions, rapid toughening, and resinous bitterness. Spiny aster is best regarded as a survival or supplementary plant rather than a meaningful wild vegetable.

Chloracantha spinosa is an evergreen Shrub growing to 2 m (6ft) by 2 m (6ft) at a medium rate.
